Weekend Rewind: Munce Sizzles, Pikes Peak and Unusual Suspect


MUNCE’S SIZZLING DAY
Jockey Chris Munce rode a treble at Eagle Farm, riding SIR LUMINAR to a maiden victory in the listed, $100,000 2yo colts and geldings, Phelan Ready Stakes and then later in the day, winning the listed $100,000 Gold Edition Plate with favourite SIZZLING (11—6:2:0). Sizzling, with just 11 races under the 3yo’s belt, has now accumulated $882,000 in career earnings. The two $100,000 victories book-ended Munce’s win on KEEP IT MOIST (12—5:2:2).

PIKE'S PEAK
Jockey William Pike had back-to-back trebles over in Western Australia this weekend, riding to victory at Ascot on Saturday, before picking up another at Pinjarra on Sunday. Pike rode  ACCELAROMETER (8—4:2:0) to his third-straight win, at Ascot, before continuing a strong start for HARD BALL GET who now finished in the top-two in all four of his career runnings. On Sunday, Pike opened up Pinjarra with the first career wins for HANG ON HONEY (14—1:2:4) and WHEN WE WERE KINGS (5—1:2:0). Pike was last year’s Western Australia Premier jockey with 110 wins. He has 44.5 wins this season. William is the descendent of Jim Pike, who rode Phar Lap and was regarded as the best jockey of his generation during the Great Depression.

FINDING HIS GROOVE?
Nine-time U.S. winner, UNUSUAL SUSPECT (USA) (71—10:8:7), finally won in Australia after 16 races. The two-time runner in the Melbourne Cup, won over 2600m at Werribee. The 9yo now has $1.5 million in career earnings and previously picked up wins in Southern California with the G1 Hollywood Turf Cup at Hollywood Park, as wins at Del Mar and Santa Anita . His best finishes in Australia have come over his last two starts, both with jockey Brad Rawiller. He was third at Sandown in mid-November.

SMELLING LIKE ROSES
CANTONESE (21—7:4:2) has now won six of his last eight after a 2400m win of the $100,000 Christmas Cup at Rosehill Gardens, while, SHE’S CLEAN (10—4:2:3) and GULLIBLE (4—3:1:0) have each won their last three races.

FLEMINGTON FLAMES
ALCOHOL (14—4:3:1) won the $100,000 Spotless Handicap at Flemington, winning for the third time in four tries, while VIBRANT ROUGE (55--4:1:0) opened up Flemington with a win over 1200m on Saturday for his fourth win in five career tries. Saturday at Flemington also continued strong careers for 3yo LAMPEDUSA (4—3:0:0) and 5yo’s BIG BEAR ROCK (9—3:4:0) and  BRITISH GENERAL (9—5:0:1).

THE TUFFAMIGO
Jockey Kyle Hocking pulled off his second treble of the month, riding three horses to victory at King Island for the second-time in December. The double trifecta has each time included JUAN TUFFAMIGO, who has now won three-straight.

THE CHIEF RETIRES
Twenty-time winner Chief de Beers (left), who won all 20 of his races at Doomben, has retired from his post-racing career post of being a police horse. The 21 yo will spend his days at Living Legends. Last racing in 1999, Chief de Beers ran 51 times (20:12:5), earning $1.5 million in prize money.

POWERFUL JET (6—2:2:1) has won his last two and was a part of a treble for Tony Patillo out at Gold Coast...  They can hear her now-- LADY ANTEBELLUM’s (13—5:3:1) last two wins have both come at Moonee Valley following a win on Friday night for the 4yo mare...
